Town-Country and United Support Literacy Ensuring Educational Equity in Wilcox County

May 04, 2021

Atmore, Ala. (OTCQX: UBAB) – United is a proud supporter of First Book, a nationwide nonprofit dedicated to ensuring educational equity as a path out of poverty. From 2016 through 2020, United has donated 7,564 books for students in Title I Schools in Baldwin, Escambia, and Monroe Counties in Alabama and in Santa Rosa County, Florida. Recently, in partnership with Town-Country National Bank of Camden, AL, a donation of 658 books were presented to Wilcox County Public School System for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Town-Country and United employees volunteered and delivered the brand-new books.

In the U.S., 33% of all schools and 20% of all students are in rural communities, where child poverty rates are highest. Educators in rural communities are critically underfunded and need help to make sure kids have what they need to succeed -- in school and in life. The First Book program provides the critically needed books and resources to kids in rural communities.

“United is deeply committed to supporting First Book,” said Bob Jones, President and CEO of United Bank. “And I’m especially pleased to partner with Town-Country to include Wilcox County in our distribution. In many cases, the children receiving these books have never before had a book of their very own. This program creates a future of possibilities for children in need.”

Hal Huggins, President and CEO of Town-Country National Bank said, “It’s a pleasure to present these books to the students of our community and we look forward to continuing to participate in the First Book program to provide additional books.”

First Book currently reaches an average of 5 million children every year and supports more than a third of the estimated 1.3 million classrooms and programs serving children in need. The books these students receive are theirs to keep, they do not remain in the class room.
